EXECUTIVE COUNCIL

The Council shall consist of selected members made up of Heads of Africa’s Maritime Administrations or their representatives. The General Assembly, taking into account an equitable geo-graphical distribution, shall elect the Members entitled to serve on the Council, provided that, of such Members, at least one of the REC’s recognized by the AU.

The Members shall be elected for two years and may be re-elected. The Council shall meet at least once a year and shall determine the place of each meeting. The General Assembly shall elect the Chairman of the Council who is also the Chairman of the association of the General Assembly.

Functions of the Council:
a) To nominate the Secretary General to give effect to the decision and policies of the General Assembly;
b) To act as the executive organ of the General Assembly;
c) To perform any other functions entrusted to it by the General Assembly;
d) To advise the General Assembly on questions referred to it by that body on matters assigned to AAMA by conventions, agreements and regulations;
e) To submit advice or proposals to the General Assembly on its own initiative ;
f) To prepare the agenda of meetings of the General Assembly;
g) To submit to the General Assembly for consideration and approval of a general
program of work covering a period of two (2) years;
h) To study all questions within its competence;
i) To take emergency measures within the functions and financial resources of the
Organization to deal with events requiring immediate action.

First Executive Meeting Held in Egypt September 2017
The Executive Committee took held its 1st Session at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) Abu Kir Campus Alexandria on 18-19th September 2017.

The Membership of the Executive Committee is comprised of representatives of Central Africa (Cameroun and Cape Verde), West Africa ( Ivory Coast and Ghana), East Africa (Tanzania and Comoros) Southern Africa (Mozambique and South Africa), North Africa (Egypt and Sudan), and Uganda representing land locked countries.

The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and Chairman of AAMA, Dr Dakuku Peterside, with the Chief Operating Officer of the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) and Head of AAMA Secretariat, Mr Sobantu Tilayi among others were in attendance and took to discuss a way forward for the development of the African maritime sector.

Second Executive Meeting held in Kenya, February 2018
The second session of the Executive Committee of the Association of African Maritime Administrations (AAMA), held on the 6- 8 February 2018, at the Pride Inn Hotel, Mombasa.

The meeting was attended by the Heads of African Maritime Administrations from about 11 African countries, led by Director General Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency and Chairman of AAMA, Dr Dakuku Peterside. The meeting was gathered in order to address the common interests in Africa’s maritime sector.

Third Executive Meeting held in Morocco, April 2019

The third session of the Executive Committee of the Association of African Maritime Administrations(AAMA) held on the 17th-18th April 2019 in Casablanca, Morocco.

The meeting held under the host-ship of the Merchant Du Marine Directorate, Morocco. The Chairman of AAMA/Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dakuku Peterside presided over the Executive Council meeting.

Fourth Executive Meeting Held in Accra Ghana February 2020

The fourth session of the AAMA Executive Committee meeting took place at the Labadi Beach Hotel, in Accra Ghana from the 10-11 February 2020.

The meeting was attended by the Heads of Maritime Administration, nine of which were from member countries of the Executive Committee Council, comprising of Cabo Verde, South Africa, Ghana, Mozambique, Comoros, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Nigeria. From Non-Executive Committee Members were from Kenya, Gambia, Sierra Leone and Angola. Attending the meeting was also those Associations with observer status of AAMA which were the African Women in Maritime (WIMAFRICA) and the Maritime Organization of West and Central Africa (MOWCA

Fifth Executive Meeting held online on MS Teams, South Africa July 2022

The Fifth AAMA Executive Council meeting was held on the virtual platform MS Teams, fully hosted by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), on the 26 July 2022.

The meeting was attended by seven Executive Committee members, comprising of Nigeria, Uganda, Ghana, Comoros, Egypt, Cabo Verde, and South Africa. The meeting was also joined by two international bodies seeking collaboration with the Association, being The Inter-governmental Standing Committee of Shipping (ISCOS) and The International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA).

Sixth Executive Meeting held online on MS Teams, South Africa 2023

The 6th Session of the AAMA Executive Council, was held on the 29 March 2023, hosted by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), on virtual Platform MS Teams.

The Secretariat received confirmation of attendance from the following countries who were present in the meeting. Those countries are from Cabo Verde, Comoros, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. The meeting was also attended by the Maritime Business Chamber (MBC), a non- profit company that holds an observer status to AAMA.
